NOAA, NASA to announce 2017 global temperature and climate conditions

January 12, 2018Climate experts from NOAA and NASA will discuss the release of new data on 2017 global temperatures and the most important climate trends of the year during a media teleconference at 11:00 a.m. EST on Thursday, Jan. 18.
A collage of typical climate and weather-related events: heatwaves, drought, hurricanes, wildfires and changes in sea ice coverage.
NOAA and NASA are two keepers of the world's temperature data and independently produce a record of Earth's surface temperatures, as well as changes based on historical observations over ocean and land. Consistency between the two independent analyses, and analyses produced by other countries, increases confidence in the accuracy of such data, the assessment of the data, and resulting conclusions. These analyses provide government and business leaders with critical decision-making information.
The NOAA and NASA 2017 global temperature analyses will be issued 30 minutes before the start of the teleconference (NOAA reportoffsite linkNASA releaseoffsite link).

Explained: A look at how lightning strikes, and why it kills

Lightning is a very rapid — and massive — discharge of electricity in the atmosphere, some of which is directed towards the Earth’s surface. (Photo: File) At least 30 people were killed in separate incidents of lightning in various parts of the country in the past 24 hours. While   Rajasthan reported 18 deaths , Uttar Pradesh recorded 12. Causalities have also been reported from Madhya Pradesh. Earlier in June,   20 persons were killed   in lightning strikes in three districts of south Bengal. Deaths due to lightning have become frequent in the country. In July last year,  40 people were killed  by lightning in Bihar in two separate incidents. So, why — and how frequently — does lightning kill in India? How common are deaths by lightning? More common than is sometimes realised in the urban areas. As a whole, India sees 2,000-2,500 lightning deaths every year on average. Lightning is the biggest contributor to accidental deaths due to natural causes. A few years ...

About World Physical Therapy Day: The theme this year is "Fit for life".

World Physical Therapy Day is on 8th September  every year. The day is an opportunity for physiotherapists from all over the world to raise awareness about the crucial contribution the profession makes to keeping people well, mobile and independent. In 1996, the  World Confederation of Physical Therapy  (WCPT) designated 8th September as World Physical Therapy Day. This is the date WCPT was founded in 1951. The day marks the unity and solidarity of the global physiotherapy community. It is an opportunity to recognise the work that physiotherapists do for their patients and community. Using World Physical Therapy Day as a focus, WCPT aims to support member organisations in their efforts to promote the profession and advance their expertise. Reports from around the world indicate that World Physical Therapy Day activities have a positive impact on the profession’s profile and standing with both the public and policy makers. Many WCPT member or...
